Wisdom Teeth Removal (Extraction): What to Expect, Recovery & Pain

When is it a good idea to have your wisdom teeth pulled?

Wisdom teeth are the third molars in the back of your mouth. They are the last teeth to come in, and they usually come in between the ages of 17 and 25.

Many people have their wisdom teeth pulled because they don’t have enough room in their mouth for them. Wisdom teeth can also cause problems with your other teeth, so your dentist may recommend that you have them removed.

What are the potential side effects of having wisdom teeth removed?

The potential side effects of having wisdom teeth removed include pain, swelling, bruising, and bleeding.

Wisdom teeth removal is typically done under local anesthesia, which numbs the area around the teeth. General anesthesia may also be used for wisdom teeth removal, which puts you to sleep during the procedure.

What does the complete removal of lower wisdom teeth involve?

The complete removal of lower wisdom teeth involves the removal of the wisdom teeth and the surrounding gum tissue. The gum is then stitched up and the area is left to heal.

What are the main possible risks of removing a wisdom tooth?

The main risks of removing a wisdom tooth are infection, damage to the surrounding teeth, and nerve damage.

The most common complication is called a dry socket, which occurs when the blood clot that forms in the extraction socket is dislodged. This can cause severe pain and prolonged healing time.

Is there much pain or swelling after the removal of wisdom teeth?

There is usually some pain and swelling after the removal of wisdom teeth. An ice pack can help with the swelling. The mouth may be sore after surgery, but this usually goes away within the first 24 hours.

Is there anything else I need to do after the extractions?

After you have your teeth extracted, there are a few things you need to do to ensure a speedy and healthy recovery.

For the first few weeks after surgery, it is important to avoid hard or crunchy foods so that your gums can heal properly. Stick to soft foods and cut your food into small pieces. It is also important to rinse your mouth with warm salt water several times a day, especially after eating. This will help to keep your mouth clean and free of infection.

On the day after surgery, be sure to brush your teeth gently with a soft-bristled toothbrush.

Why Should I Have My Wisdom Teeth Removed?

There are a few reasons why you may want to have your wisdom teeth removed. For one, if they are impacted (stuck and growing in at an angle), they can damage the molars next to them.

Additionally, wisdom teeth may crowd other teeth and cause pain or difficulty chewing.

Third molars are also known as wisdom teeth, and are the last teeth to come in. They typically erupt between ages 17-25. If they become impacted (trapped within the gum or bone), they may need to be removed by an oral surgeon.

Are there any alternatives to removing a wisdom tooth?

Wisdom teeth are often removed because they can cause problems with the alignment of other teeth. However, there are some alternatives to removing a wisdom tooth, including:

  • Gum surgery: This involves trimming the gum tissue around the wisdom tooth so that it can be removed more easily.
  • Tooth extraction: This is a more traditional method of removing a wisdom tooth. The tooth is pulled out with forceps.
  • Laser treatment: A laser is used to remove the wisdom tooth. This method is often used for people who have gum disease.

How do I prepare for wisdom teeth removal?

Wisdom teeth removal is an outpatient procedure, which means you can go home the same day.

Before the procedure, your dentist or oral surgeon will give you instructions on how to prepare. It is important to follow these instructions carefully. For example, you may be asked to not eat or drink anything for a certain period of time before the procedure. This is because anesthesia (medicine that makes you sleepy and pain-free) will be used during the procedure, and eating or drinking could make you vomit.

You may also be asked to brush your teeth well before the procedure. This helps to prevent infection.

Finally, be sure to arrange for someone to drive you home after the procedure, as you will not be able to drive yourself.
